Queen Leila is a minor character in the film, Maleficent. She was the daughter of King Henry, the wife of King Stefan, and Aurora's mother. She was married to Stefan as part of his reward for his "slaying" of the fairy, Maleficent.

A year or so after her and Stefan's coronation as the new king and queen, Leila gave birth to their only daughter, Aurora. About fifteen years later, Leila contracted an unknown illness and died. Stefan does not mourn, or show any signs of grief at her death, as he has become completely focused and consumed to the point of obsession with hunting down Maleficent and killing her.

She was portrayed by Hannah New.

Physical Appearance[]

Queen Leila was tall and graceful with long blonde hair, large hazel eyes and she had classically beautiful features, and her beauty is clearly inherited by Princess Aurora.

As a queen, Queen Leila wore an elaborate jeweled headdress with a golden tiara on top of it. Her dress was cloth-of-silver trimmed with fur, and she wore sparkling silver shoes.

Personality[]

Little was shown of Queen Leila, as she only appeared for Aurora’s christening, but she seemed to love her daughter very much and was extremely fearful about Maleficent’s curse upon her and was most likely heartbroken that she couldn’t raise or meet Aurora. She seemed to be a kind and cheerful royal (which her daughter most likely inherited from her) but she did not seem to know enough about the Moors other than the Dark Fae Maleficent.

Additionally, she did not know of Stefan’s past with the titular character, nor was she aware of Stefan’s over consuming obsession with killing Maleficent. In fact, even when she requested to see him before dying, Stefan not only refused to do so, but he even didn’t care about it afterwards, leaving Leila to die a lonely death without ever getting the chance to meet her daughter.

Maleficent[]

Queen Leila is seated on her throne beside her husband King Stefan as the kingdom celebrates the birth of their newborn and only daughter, Princess Aurora. The celebration in the throne room is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Maleficent, whose appearance visibly worries Queen Leila and angers her husband, King Stefan. Leila watches in horror as the evil fairy Maleficent places a curse upon the baby Princess Aurora, their newborn and only daughter.

Over the next sixteen years, Stefan became paranoid to the point of obsession with hunting Maleficent down, so obsessed that he didn't care that his queen was gravely ill and on the verge of death. Shortly after Stefan is done with his chat with Maleficent's wings, Queen Leila dies of an illness, and she never gets the chance to meet her daughter, who on the other hand is unaware of her identity and was not given the chance to learn about her mother due to Stefan’s obsession causing him to neglect her as well.

Origin[]

Queen Leila's appearance in the film is minimal, and nothing is known of her life before the events of the film take place. It can be assumed that as a princess, she lived a happy life with her parents at the castle and knew little to nothing of the troubles of the world.

However, when her father died in battle with Maleficent, she became queen, and shortly after she marries Stefan and had a daughter named Aurora.

Trivia[]

  • It seems unlikely that Queen Leila knew the true circumstances of Stefan's attack on Maleficent or his obsessive, treacherous, and ruthless nature.
  • It seems that Leila was not very knowledgeable about the Moors, given her quick, somewhat naïve trust of Flittle, Thistlesit, and Knotgrass and lack of awareness on Maleficent herself aside from her status as the Protector of the Moors.
  • Despite becoming queen, she is credited as Princess Leila.
